BISSELL created new packaging for its new concentrated cleaning formulas. The new 3X concentrate bottle requires 50% less plastic (HDPE) than the current gallon size bottle. The bottles are made with at least 25% post-consumer recycled plastic (HDPE) and are recyclable.

Cuisinart® GreenGourmet™ Cookware uses manufacturing techniques that reduce harmful carbon emissions by consuming less energy. The cookware’s Cuisinart Ceramica™ non-stick technology features a petroleum-free, ceramic-based coating, applied at a temperature one-half that of traditional non-sticks. The coating does not use PTFE or PFOA chemicals and can be effectively recovered, disassembled, or reused in efficient biological and/or industrial cradle to cradle cycles. Riveted handles are made of 70% recycled stainless steel.
Packaging is made from 100% recycled paper materials and is printed with 100% soy ink. The reinforcement tabs are made from 100% recycled Kraft paper and water-based adhesive.

Once the consumer purchases the Wonder Tablitz spray bottle and uses up the initial 32 oz. of cleaner, the bottle is reused for more Tablitz. Umbra frames are made with plantation grown rubberwood, replacing forest grown woods. The trees, normally burned at the end of their latex-producing cycle, are now used instead of being wasted. The frames use water-based stains and Masonite backing boards. Masonite is a material that heats and presses wood chips into strong boards without formaldehyde-based binding resins. No glues are used.

EcoGen Design

EcoGen is made of a material created by feeding corn starch sugar to naturally occurring microorganisms. These microorganisms digest the sugar and store the resulting PHBV polymer. Extracted from the microorganism, the stored material, Enmat®, is then blended with other biodegradable compounds for processing in standard injection molding machines. When exposed to bacteria in compost or soil, EcoGen decomposes into carbon dioxide, water and biomass. EcoGen can withstand temperatures of 230º F.

Umbra’s popular Garbini cans are now made of corn plastic: a renewable, biodegradable raw material, PolyLactid Acid (PLA), which is an alternative to petrochemical plastics. Its production requires less fossil fuel to manufacture, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and does not contain toxic chemicals compared to fossil-fuel based resins. PLA can be derived from any organic material that contains starch.

BISSELL reclaims, reprocesses and re-uses materials from recycled BISSELL products for the brush block and tanks of the Little Green. Removing PVC from the tank, hose, and carton of the Little Green reduces usage of this material by more than 175 tons annually. Little Green’s redesigned packaging uses a minimum of 75% recycled corrugated and eliminates EPS foam. In 2008 this will keep 20 truckloads of EPS out of the waste stream.

Eco-Chef cookware has a 100% natural ceramic coating, an exterior made of 99% recycled aluminum and a handle of sustainable bamboo. During production, applying the ceramic coating uses much less energy than applying a traditional non-stick coating. It is chemical free with no PFOA and contains no PTFE. Its packaging is made of 100% recycled paper and recycled polybags.

Loofah, a tropical vine grown in Asia and Africa, yields a hanging fruit that looks like a large cucumber. Eaten as a vegetable, it is peeled, hollowed out and dried, then its fibrous gourd can be used as a bath or kitchen scrubber. A sustainable, renewable agricultural crop, loofah biodegrades to replenish soil nitrogen. Loofah-Art uses natural vegetable dyes for coloring and fills the decorative forms with additional loofah material.

Artisans in Pomaire, Chile, use traditional techniques to create clay cookware that is dried naturally, then smoothed and burnished with an agate stone before being fired. No glaze of varnish is used. An iron-hard finish results from firing for 8 hours at high temperature in ovens fueled by wood gathered locally from fallen or managed forest trees. Wood shavings, previously discarded by the local furniture mill, are used for packing materials, replacing newspaper, plastic foam or peanuts.

STORViNO switched from recyclable high density polyethylene (HDPE) to 100% post-consumer recycled HDPE to make the Nero wine storage module. Retailer demand for greener products has moved the company toward making more products of recycled materials and moving its manufacturing and distribution from California to Kansas to reduce shipping distances. The product is sold without packaging at retail and ships on a recycled pallet.

Aladdin Sustain mugs are made of eCycle® polypropylene (PP), 100% recycled plastic—25% post-consumer recycled content and 75% pre-consumer (post-industrial) recycled content. The recycled PP is collected from controlled sources of food and beverage grade plastics such as tubs often used for refrigerated food packaging like margarine and yogurt. The mug’s material is recyclable polypropylene #5 resin.

The ECO10 increases energy efficiency and reduces carbon emissions during use. At the end of its lifecycle the entire unit, including the polypropylene filter, is recyclable. The ECO10 uses sheet metal instead of common plastic like ABS, so it is easily recyclable, not made from oil, stronger and lasts longer than plastic.
